Crete — how to plan the trip

Crete is over 250 kilometres long, so the base you pick decides the whole trip. The west, around Chania, is greener and holds the most famous beaches; the east, near Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos, offers easier family hotels and shorter airport transfers.

The island rewards anyone who rents a car. The finest bays — Balos, Elafonisi, Seitan Limania — sit at the end of winding roads that buses reach rarely or never.

Beyond the beaches Crete offers full-scale trekking: the Samaria gorge is 16 kilometres downhill from the mountains to the sea. Plan that full-day walk early in the stay, while your legs are fresh.

When to go

June and September are the sweet spot: the sea is above 24°C and the heat does not get in the way of sightseeing. July and August can be tiring, with temperatures above 35°C and the strong meltemi wind.

May and October are cheaper and ideal for trekking, though the water can still be cool and some hotels open only in mid-May.
